Schwäbisch Gmünd in Bloom

Germany Day 7

One of my favorite things to do in Baden-Württemberg is to attend the Landesgartenschau. “Landesgartenschau” roughly translates into a regional or state botanical exhibition. It is held in a different city every year and features a mind-blowing array of displays and activities. For nearly a year, there are concerts and special lectures for all ages.

Though I liked last year’s Landesgartenschau in Nagold better because I felt there were more flowers and exhibits, this year was still spectacular. Whereas the exhibition was more contained last year, this year it was expansive with multiple sites reachable via shuttle bus. The trek through the forest with wooden walkways was especially great for children.

There is row after row of spectacular flowers.

After climbing the tower, you get a better picture of the grand design.

After viewing the main parts of the garden show, Chris and I wandered around Schwäbisch Gmünd for a couple hours. It is a picturesque city that has maintained much of its character and flair. They even built a highway tunnel under the town in order to not disturb more of the historical buildings than was necessary.

I have a serious fixation on triangular buildings.

    • Your comments are for Stefanie, not Stephanie, Golisch. She is a German writer. There is also a German opera singer named Stefanie Golisch. However, thanks for the tip, this book is on my reading list!
